New Maltese Owner? - What to Expect When You Get Your First Maltese

After my husband and I got married we wanted to get a dog. We are both dog lovers and wanted to have a dog together. We figured this would be a great way for us to share the wonderful experience of finding, training, and loving a pet that we picked together.

Armed only with the knowledge that we a small breed dog (we were living in a small house at the time) we hit the pet stores. We did not get beyond the first one. As we walked around looking in the kennels we saw the most adorable, sweetest looking, white little puppy, I was not familiar with the breed but it was a Maltese. After spending some time with this cute little creature in the bonding room our minds were made up. She was so cute and energetic we just had to have her. We paid our money and took her home with us.

This was my first Maltese so I hit the books to learn all about them.

That was three years ago. The time with our Maltese has been wonderful and I would highly recommend the breed to just about anyone. Here are some of the things I found out about the Maltese breed you may want to take into consideration if you are thinking about getting a one.

  • Malteses are Divas. Out Maltese just thinks the she is the be all and end all and has her spot on our bed and couch and God forbid we should get in her way.
  • Malteses are like Little People.  My husband calls her "high maintenance" but it is true that our Maltese requires a lot of attention and work. Malteses can be finnicky eaters and at dinner time we always have to get oon the floor with her to get her to eat.
  • Malteses are Loud -At least ours is. We do not mind it too much but be prepared if you decide to get a Maltese that you will hear a lot of barking.
  • Malteses Eyes get Yucky - Maltese eyes are very susceptible to eye or tear stains. There are a number of products you can buy but we found that if you use baby shampoo, a delicate cloth, and very careful use of round edge scissors you can keep the clean.
  • Malteses are Brave - Our Maltese will stand up to any dog she comes across. She has no fear of large dogs or people that come over. We have no idea what she thinks she is going to do if she gets a hold of them but she has no fear of any larger breed of dog so you want to make sure you have a firm grip on the leash if you are crossing paths with other dogs on a walk.

The Maltese is such a wonderful breed of dog and ours has become a member of the family. If you are considering a small breed dog you should definitely consider the Maltese.
